Personal Experience & Biography
Kara Burr specializes in play therapy in her work with children dealing with abuse, neglect, body image, mood disorders, negative self-concept, problematic school behavior, and grief issues. Outside of meeting with children, Kara also meets with parents to help them learn more effective and connective strategies in relating to their children. She also works with adopted children and their families to help facilitate the bonding process and help them form trust-based relationships.
She has a BA in Psychology from Texas Christian University, and a Masters in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary. Kara is trained in TBRI, Trust-Based Relational Intervention, which is an empirically based model to assist children who have experienced relationship-based traumas such as institutionalization, maltreatment, and neglect. Kara is also a certified DBT therapist having been intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy under the supervision of Behavioral Tech. Kara has also been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) and is working on applying these principles to children and their parents in order to create healthy, connected relationships, thus preventing Persistent Depression Disorder.
Kara’s chief desire in counseling is to walk graciously alongside her clients, gently challenge them, help them restore a positive sense of self, and build authentic relationships with family and others.
